“Struggling readers need to be motivated to read at home. High tech toys often steal the student’s attention from reading. Leap Pad Personal Learning Tools combine multi-sensory technology with specially designed books to actively engage students’ attention. Students will carry Leap Pads home to read alone or with family.”
SkillsUSA, Dressed for Success -- WHS – Piper Woodring -- $1892
“SkillsUSA is a National High School Vocational Student organization. The purpose of SkillsUSA is, among other things, to unite a common bond between students enrolled in trade and industrial, technical, and technology education, to develop leadership qualities and abilities, and to foster a deep respect for the dignity of work. Part of participation in SkillsUSA events is the participation in an official dress code. Here at WHS there is a need for Official red jackets.”

“4th Graders will use an alphabet book entitled “T is for Tarheel” to learn about North Carolina. They will complete a workbook about the book and will then use the format of the book as a model for a class ABC book about Watauga County.”
Positively Changing Behavior! -- WHS/Parkway -Cindy Brown -- $1930
Funds requested “to purchase an innovative software program (Ripple Effects) that helps students identify their problem behaviors and replace them with social-emotional skills that improve both their academic and behavior performance. The software is proven to be effective in reducing office referrals and repeat offenders in In School Suspension Settings.”
Watauga County Fifth Grade Choral Festival -- All K-8 WCS-Jeanie Hawkins -- $820
“This project is an on-going choral festival for 5th grade students who are in general music classes in WCS. Students from each elementary school will come together at ASU for an all-day rehearsal and performance at the end of the afternoon.”

“Through Watauga Pioneer TV, students in the Broadcast Journalism class explore creative as well as technical challenges and opportunities directing and creating videos to be aired on a regular basis to the entire school. Minor upgrades and equipment purchases will enhance the overall learning for students.”
Geography Resources -- WHS-Susan Lawrence -- $780
“Since Geography has not been taught at WHS for several years, many materials are outdated &/or have been discarded. Particularly acute is the need for up-to-date atlases. Using Thomas Friedman’s, The World is Flat, as outside reading will inform students about the rapid pace of change and globalization. Both will be used as discussion springboards of the many “flatteners” that they see occurring around them.”
Hands-on Science -- Cove Creek-Stephen Sorrell -- $1324
“This project aims to refurbish Cove Creek’s science lab, which has over its 10 year life, seen supplies exhausted and equipment broken or worn out. In collaboration with the County Office, we seek to make the lab safer and better able to meet the curricular needs of Cove Creek students.”
Extending PE Curriculum: Orienteering for MS Students and Enhancing Recreational Fitness at Hardin Park School -- Hardin Park-Mary P. Williams -- $1246
“Funding will purchase equipment and resource material to teach orienteering and expanding PE in Middle School including mats, CDs, DVDs to enhance a recreational fitness class. Programs will diversify activities for middle school students.”

“The Technology Mentors exploratory class for Middle School students will use digital video cameras and Microsoft Moviemaker software to create multimedia projects. They will, in turn, film other classes for curriculum-related projects and assist younger classes in learning how to use Moviemaker in their projects.”
Flaunting Flourishing Fluency -- Mabel – Amy Miller -- $1000
“2nd & 3rd grade students develop fluency skills by repeatedly reading books. After practicing, they will record their books on tape. The students will review their recording for fluency and repeat the recording process until they have quality products which will be used in lower grade listening centers.”

Funds used “to purchase digital cameras, printers, and supplies in order to record ALL aspects of the kindergarten day and make learning more meaningful to our students. We will enable them to become independent workers, read and write, record data, and develop an understanding of social and emotional conflicts.”

21st Century Classrooms: Collaboration & Technology -- Green Valley – Angie Austin -- $1400
Funds will be used to purchase a document camera and data projector to complete a technology-rich 3rd grade classroom ~ a pilot for 21st century classrooms. This equipment along with teacher collaboration are essential to enhance student learning emphasizing process and excitement for students.
Books to Remember -- Parkway – Susan Wilson -- $691
Funds used to purchase “Books to Remember” for Exceptional Students. This is a series of 20 books, in 3 sets, designed for novice readers which follow a carefully designed scope and sequence. Included are learning cards that reinforce sight vocabulary and specific phonemes.
We Choose, We Like, We Read -- Valle Crucis – Wendy Nicholson -- $1596
Funds used to purchase books for middle school aged readers in hopes of increasing their leisure reading. Students’ interest will be enhanced by involving them in choosing age appropriate books.
